Why Library Websites Are Failing Their Users And What to Do About It

Public libraries do important work. They offer resources for lifelong learning, access to technology, and community programming that meets people where they are. But too often, their digital presence doesn’t match the quality of services they provide in person.

We’ve worked with libraries of all sizes, and the patterns are familiar: outdated navigation, search tools that frustrate more than help, content that’s hard to keep up to date, and accessibility issues that limit who can engage with the site.

These annoyances can block people from finding programs, using online databases, or even attending events.

What’s Getting in the Way

It’s rarely a matter of neglect, and the issue is that most public sector websites were built with a “launch and leave” mindset. The structure works for a while, until user needs change. And they always do.

Here’s what we see most often:

And when updates feel too difficult, content falls behind. That’s when users stop coming back.

A Different Way to Approach It

Event details are now easy to view, register for, and share, streamlined into one accessible, user-friendly LocalHop interface on the new EBRPL website.

We recently worked with East Baton Rouge Parish Library (EBRPL) to rethink their entire digital platform. More than a fresh design, Cynerge’s LocalHop team worked to make their website easier to use for patrons, and easier to manage for staff.

That meant improving the way information is organized, creating visual tools that help people find what they need, and giving departments the ability to manage their own content without needing a developer.

The final site is fast, secure, and mobile-friendly. More importantly, it supports the real work the library does every day.

We go deeper into what worked, what we built, and how it’s made a difference in both a detailed case study and a white paper built for public sector leaders.
